Leucojum Gravetye Giant
This impressive Summer Snowlake – Leucojum aestivum Gravetye Giant is the improved variety of the wild snowflake, which was cultivated by the Englishman William Robinson in 1924. This snowflake is sturdier than the regular snowflake, and instead of 3 flowers, it grows 4-8 flowers. Even though its Latin name “aestivum” means “of the summer”, this snowflake blooms in spring (early May). Gravetye Giant has lovely, nodding bell-shaped flowers in white colour with green tips on its petals. Because of its length (50-60 cm tall), the snowflakes look amazing in the perimeters and borders of the garden. Snowflakes prefer wet and swampy soil, because they need consistent moisture to grow and naturalize. In Europe you can find wild Leucojum in almost every forest, however in the Netherlands it’s considered a rare flower.
